Then, continue to Part II.Part II Henry David Thoreau polite Disobedience was inspired by a night in jail, which Thoreau had to work for non paying his poll tax. His refusal to pay a tax to the republic stemmed from his opposition to slavery. The state supported it, and to show his disdain towards the states position, he refused to pay this tax. Some people have suggested the essay shows that Thoreau merely precious to withdraw from life and all its hard questions.
